The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into William Grant & Sons' planned acquisition of Edrington's The Famous Grouse. The CMA will examine whether the merger could reduce competition, raise prices, or limit consumer choice in the UK market.
The Famous Grouse, currently the UK's largest Scotch whisky brand with supermarket sales of $216.1 million, maintains a strong market leadership position. The CMA has set March 27 for its initial decision, with a public comment period ending February 12.
If significant concerns arise, the investigation will advance to a second phase with independent expert review. William Grant & Sons views the 125-year-old brand as having substantial potential for innovation and international growth.
