Americans spent $228 billion on alcohol last year, with striking per capita differences across states, according to SmartAsset analysis of U.S. Commerce Department data.
Alaska topped the list with per-adult spending at $1,250, followed by Wyoming ($1,237) and Colorado ($1,202). These states significantly exceed the national averages, despite having smaller populations.
Total state spending tells a different story, with California dominating at $29 billion, followed by Texas ($21 billion), Florida ($17 billion), and New York ($12 billion). Much of this success was driven purely by population scale. Total spending data also shows North Dakota ($478 million), Vermont ($526 million), South Dakota ($540 million), and Wyoming ($543 million) at the bottom.
