U.S. spirits exports grew 30% to a record $2.06 billion in 2022, after a temporary halt to retaliatory tariffs, according to a new report released today by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS). This is despite the fact that American whiskey exports to the UK remain lower than pre-tariff levels.
The EU was the largest export market for U.S. spirits, accounting for approximately 34% of U.S. spirits exports and totaling $703 million. Other markets in the top five included Canada ($268 million), the UK ($159 million), Australia ($141 million), and Japan ($113 million). American whiskeys accounted for 62% of all spirits exports in value terms, and 23% in volume terms.
“We urge the Biden administration to secure the permanent removal of these tariffs," commented Rob Maron, DISCUS Vice President of International Trade. "If an agreement on steel and aluminum is not reached with the EU before the end of 2023, the EU will reimpose its retaliatory tariff at 50% on American Whiskeys. That will bring this renewed interest in American Whiskey among EU consumers to a screeching halt.” [Fred Minnick]
