A federal jury has ruled in favor of Constellation Brands, allowing the drinks giant to continue selling Corona and Modelo hard seltzers in the United States.
In 2021, Anheuser-Busch InBev and its Mexican subsidiary, Grupo Modelo, sued Constellation in order to halt sales of Corona Hard Seltzer and Modelo Ranch Water. Grupo Modelo claimed that the sale of these products was a violation of a 2013 licensing agreement allowing Constellation to sell Corona and Modelo beers in the United States.
The agreement defined “beer” as “ale, porter, stout, malt beverages and any other versions or combinations of the foregoing, including nonalcoholic versions.” Constellation argued in its court filings that hard seltzers fall under the “malt beverage” category. Grupo Modelo expressed disappointment in the jury's verdict and is currently evaluating further options. [AP News]
