In 2022, sotol experienced a significant 17% increase in volumes, and IWSR forecasts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% for the category between 2022 and 2027. Currently, over 60% of sotol production in Mexico is exported, primarily to the U.S.
Several new sotol brands have entered the U.S. and Mexican markets with ambitions to position sotol as "the next mezcal," including Nocheluna, a partnership between Casa Lumbre, Pernod Ricard, and musician Lenny Kravitz. However, sotol's volumes remain small compared to tequila and mezcal, and growth projections suggest this may not change significantly in the near future. [IWSR]
At Bar Convent Brooklyn this past summer, Luigi Ambrosi, Co-Founder & CEO of Cardenxe Sotol, explained why he believes the category will be the next big spirit to come out of Mexico and what makes it so unique. [Park Street]
