Italian drinks firm Illva Saronno Group has purchased a majority stake in Baltimore-based rye whiskey brand Sagamore Spirit. With Disaronno and Tia Maria already in its portfolio, this marks Illva Saronno’s first entrance into the American rye whiskey category.
Founded in 2013 by Kevin Plank, Sagamore Spirit’s American rye whiskies have earned more than 200 awards internationally. The whiskey producer maintains three core SKUs as well as a line of canned cocktails. With the acquisition, Illva Saronno aims to strengthen its position in the U.S. market.
Aldino Marzorati, CEO of Illva Saronno Holding, stated that the acquisition will help Illva Saronno enter “the attractive Bourbon whiskey category and exploit its growth potential around 160 countries where we already have a presence with Disaronno.” [The Drinks Business]
