Over the last few years, spirits have led both wine and beer in off-premise growth, according to data from Nielsen. Off-premise dollar sales for spirits have grown over 33% from 2019 to the mid-year point of 2022, while beer and wine have grown 15.2% and 14.8% respectively.
The growth so far this year has been led by tequila, premixed cocktails, and Irish whiskey. Premixed cocktails are poised to increase their volume share of total off-premise spirits by 23.8% compared to last year, followed by tequila with a 17.8% increase, and Irish whiskey at 12.1%.
Spirits in higher price tiers are also showing more off-premise growth mid-year than those in lower tiers. Spirits in the $50 to $99.99 tier have grown at 16.8% compared to the previous year, while spirits priced at $100+ have grown at 10.1%. Again, tequila has seen more growth than any other category in the $50+ tier this year, with volumes of $50+ tequila growing over 30% compared to last year. [Nielsen]
